
Dolphins all-rounder, Senuran Muthusamy has become a stalwart, proving his skills on the field. The left-arm spinner was named Player Of The Year at the franchise’s annual prize giving this year. Tabloid Newspapers recently sat down with the star to chat about his life off the pitch.
TN: What is your fondest childhood memory?
SM: My fondest childhood memory is probably getting my grandmother to bowl for me in the back garden even though she had no idea about the sport…
TN: Was a career in cricket always on the cards for you? What did you want to be when you grew up?
SM: Growing up I always wanted to become a professional cricketer but I only really started believing I could do it once I’d left school. I have got a Bachelor of Social Science degree from UKZN with majors in media and marketing.
TN: Tell us a bit about your journey -when did your sporting career take
off?
SM: My journey started at Clifton preparatory and I proceeded through to the high school. I was privileged enough to play KZN schools cricket from U11 till U19.
My career has gradually taken shape and I have enjoyed a few good years with the Dolphins.
TN: What is your most memorable moment from the pitch?
SM: It is getting 52 not out in last season’s Momentum Cup Final when we were in real trouble . The rain came down and the game ended in a draw and both teams shared the trophy. This was my first professional trophy, so it’s special to me.
TN: Was there ever a time that you just wanted to give up? What obstacles have you faced and how did you overcome them?
SM: There are many highs and lows in cricket, it is a true test of ones character. I have had days early in my career when I thought about giving up the game to focus soley on studying and the corporate environment but I’m so thankful that I persevered through.
TN: What are your top three tips for aspiring cricketers?
SM: The key is to find the balance between sport, academics, social and family life. To be able to persevere through the tough times and hang in there. To practice diligently and enjoy every moment of playing the game.
TN: Describe your cricketing career in just four words
SM: Hard work, enjoyment, perseverance.
TN: What is your favourite place to go an unwind?
SM: I haven’t got one place in particular but I enjoy the Durban promenade and jogging along there is refreshing. I also thoroughly enjoy yoga as a hobby of mine.
TN: You have said that you enjoy spending time with family and friends, is there a special lady in your life as well?
SM: Unfortunately there isn’t a special lady in my life at the moment, but who knows what’s around the corner…
TN: How did it feel to be voted as the Dolphins Player of the Year in April?
SM: To be voted as the Dolphins Player Of The Year was immensely special to me. It’s been years of effort and I’m thankful to be recognised.
TN: Do you think community/fan support affects your game at all?
SM: I think as a team we always enjoy playing in front of crowds of people and entertaining our fans so it would be great if we could get more people to the stadium.

TN: What is your ultimate dream/ goal?
SM: My ultimate goal is to represent the Proteas for an extended period of time and travel the world. I would also like to one day play in the various leagues around the world.
