Tributes have been pouring in for a Hillcrest pharmacist whose car was washed away during the torrential rains on Stapleton Road in Pinetown last week.

The Northdene mother of twins, who was identified as Vanitha Jeawon, was described on social media as a kind, loving and caring individual. She was driving home from work when the tragic incident unfolded.

According to reports, Jeawon made a phone call to her husband minutes before her phone was switched off after she was swept away by the extreme current.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said: “A female in her 50s was found by rescuers on Gordon Road, just off Stapleton Road. She unfortunately sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.”

A customer who visits the Clicks Pharmacy at Lillies Quarter, Ranjini Ragavan, said the death of Jeawon has left her heartbroken. “Whenever I visited the store, the smile on Vanitha’s face always brightened my day. She was loving, helpful, kind and had a bubbly personality. I pray for strength for her family during this devastating time. We all have so many unanswered questions, but this is what the almighty wanted, he always takes the best away first.”

Clicks has faced criticism on social media, with comments alleging that the company was aware of the level six weather warning but failed to prioritise the safety of their staff. The manager of the branch was contacted for a tribute message but declined to comment.
The funeral service of Jeawon was held on Sunday, 16 March at Clare Estate Crematorium.
