Nominations open for prestigious Ammen Awards

The Shri Mariammen Temple Society (SMTS) has opened nominations for the esteemed Annual Ammen Awards 2026, scheduled to take place on Good Friday, 3 April 2026, at the Shri Mariammen Temple.

The awards recognise excellence from different facets of community service which contribute positively to various communities. Event coordinator Allen Soobramoney said the awards honour the spirit and efforts of ordinary people doing extraordinary work. “This year marks 26 years of the prestigious annual awards ceremony. The nominations are opened to all South Africans and members of the public are encouraged to nominate people of interest that have excelled in the following categories: Promotion of Hindu Religion, Promotion of Eastern Languages, Promotion of Arts and Culture, Excellence in Education, Community Socio-Economic Upliftment, Excellence in Media and Excellence in Sports.”

Soobramoney said each nominator must provide a detailed curriculum vitae of the nominee, and all applications must contain the contact information of both the nominator and the nominee. “All nominations must be e-mailed to: admin@ammenkovil.co.za or hand delivered to the Temple Office. The closing date for nominations is Friday, 6 March 2026. Late entries will not be considered, and the Ammen Awards Committees’ decision is final.”
