Newlands-based book club, My Book, My Friend, continues to nurture young minds through its literature programme. My Book, My Friend was established in 2019 as a non-profit organisation which solely depends on donations and sponsorships from companies like Liberty Booksellers and Stationer.
“We saw a need to educate our children at tender ages to ensure that they are equipped with literature development despite coming from humbling backgrounds. The purpose of the book club is to mobilise and gather children from our community and re-introduce them into the literature space and motivate them into re-learning it but this time in an informal environment yet educational and memorable way,” said the book club’s chairperson, Zandile Mtambo.
She said that the book club values skill development, team work, creativity, motivation, education and fun. “Our school programmes, which are hosted during the holidays, keep young minds motivated and actively ready for returning to school,” said Mtambo.
She added that support from parents, neighbours and partners, the Ward 37 Sports Committee, Big Sister Foundation and the Troop Community Foundation contributes to the constant growth of the My Book, My Friend book club. Residents who would like to support this initiative can contact Zandile Mtambo on 072-853-0382.
