Newcastle Municipality moved into the CBD, demolishing 115 unauthorised trading structures in the first phase of its “Operation Sweep the Town”.
Local Economic Development (LED) officials, supported by the Municipal Law Enforcement Unit and SAPS, conducted the operation on Thursday, 18 June, to enforce municipal by-laws and remove illegal shacks erected without permits. The crackdown followed an LED Container Verification Exercise, which identified 115 non-permitted structures operating in the town centre.
Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube said the operation aims to reclaim public spaces and relocate informal traders into regulated, permitted zones.
“The municipality issued two pronouncements to owners regarding the placement of illicit structures,” said Mayor Dube. “Those who did not heed our call have now fallen victim to the consequences. The time for negotiations has come to an end.”
Municipal officials said Phase One focused on demolishing non-permitted shacks deemed unsafe and allegedly used as bases for criminal activity. Phase Two will target containers and Wendy houses that also lack the necessary approvals.
“The municipality has taken a firm stance against unauthorised occupation by removing unlawful structures to minimise street congestion and urban overcrowding,” Mayor Dube added.
LED officials said the comprehensive operation forms part of intensified efforts to enforce compliance and restore a safe and fair trading environment for all vendors. The municipality reiterated its commitment to proactive measures aimed at improving public safety and maintaining the upkeep of the Newcastle town centre.
Traders with valid permits were not affected by demolitions. The municipality has urged affected vendors to visit LED offices to apply for allocation in designated trading areas.
