Thousands of people recently gathered at the Zulu royal palace in KwaZulu-Natal for the coronation of the new king, Misuzulu Sinqobile Hlomesakhisihlangu kaZwelithini, with schools and communities across the province donning colourful traditional Zulu attire to commemorate the special occasion.

Among those celebrating were Mkhamba Primary School learners, along with their educator, who dressed in beautiful traditional attire on Tuesday morning, 30 August. “We would like to welcome the new king and wish him many, many years of blessings as he leads his people of the KwaZulu-Natal Province,” said educator, Mbali Mdakane.

The Zulu population is estimated to make up 11 million out of the 60 million people in South Africa, making them the largest tribe. King Misuzulu Sinqobile Hlomesakhisihlangu kaZwelithini, 47, succeeds his father, Goodwill Zwelithini, who passed away last March following a 50-year reign.
