In the spirit of boosting soccer development among the youth in Phoenix, Dr SY Govender in partnership with the ABC Pastors Forum donated a whooping R50 000 to the Mount Edgecombe Springboks Football Club, last week.
The club chairperson, Professor Patchie Naicker received the donation on behalf of Mount Edgecombe Springboks FC. Prof Naicker said he was overwhelmed with the kind gesture of the ABC Forum of Pastors and that this was the first time in the history of the club that they have received such a huge donation.
“The Young Springboks, in the late 70’s, was a household name and won the prestigious Clover Cup in the same year that Dr SY Govender finished in the top 10 in his matric year. These were some of the great achievements that emanated from a simple, humble and poor community of Mount Edgecombe,” said Naicker.
The Public Relations Officer at Mount Edgecombe Springboks FC, Victor Adimoolam said: Not only is Dr Govender a man of the cloth that teaches sound and solid biblical doctrines, but that he looms largely in the spheres of humanitarianism, philanthropy and environmentalism.
“Dr SY Govender is not new to serving the community. The club salutes him for his contributions to mankind. The recent unrest bears testimony of his humanitarianism when the city of Phoenix was in a volatile situation in July 2021, Dr SY Govender and the ABC Pastors Forum provided a brand-new vehicle to one of the victims, all in the spirit of social cohesion,” said Adimoolam.
He added: “During the water shortages after the floods, he and the pastors of the ABC Forum developed a bore hole for the community in the Verulam area. He also engaged the education superintendent of mathematics and seasoned educators to assist the disadvantaged matric learners.”
Champion legendary soccer professional Rogers Marimuthoo heaped praises on the massive donation and said that the funds will assist the club to further its objectives in developing and training young professional’s in the field of soccer and provide them with the required tools of maturity and responsibility.
