Popular Drakensberg tourist attraction, Gooderson Monks Cowl Golf Resort, known for its beautiful views and golf course, recently suffered the tragic loss of their restaurant and main building to a fire which was eventually contained by firefighters and community members.

General Manager, Donald Kiley, said that the restaurant and main building caught alight on Saturday evening, 31 July. “The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage but guests were evacuated and further investigation needs to be done to determine the cause.”

Kiley said that the blaze fortunately did not spread to the rest of the resort and that no jobs will be lost. “Staff will be placed on short time and everyone will be given a fair chance to work, as we did during the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.”

Okhahlamba and Alfred Duma Municipality fire departments were called to assist with the fire and firefighters said they worked closely with members of the community to ensure that the fire did not spread to the rest of the resort. Kiley added that despite the challenges, they will rise again.
