Metro Police officer, Sizwe Ngema (27), will make his second appearance for a formal bail application on 9 April for the murder of 23-year old Metro Police officer, Bianca Yolanda Khuzwayo, who was horrifically stabbed to death at her flat on Joseph Nduli Street on Sunday, 31 March.
The matter was postponed after Ngema made his first appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on charges of premeditated murder and theft after he allegedly stabbed his pregnant girlfriend multiple times while recording her final moments and sending the recording out to the public before fleeing the scene with her cellphone on 2 April.
He was handed over to police by his family a few hours after the incident.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, SAPS provincial spokesperson, said that Durban Central Police arrested Ngema after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend in the early hours of 31 March.
He said: “It is reported that the couple was drinking alcohol when the man allegedly stabbed the woman to death. It is also reported that the suspect took videos and pictures of the woman taking her last breath and sent such to several people, including posting them on social media.”
Netshiunda added that while the abuse of liquor and other substances could be attributed to the suspect’s actions, the circumstances leading to the stabbing were not yet clear.
Sergeant Zanele Khomo, communications officer for SAPS Durban Central, said that police are investigating a case of murder.
She said: “At about 3.45am, the suspect who is a Metro Police officer, stabbed his girlfriend in her chest with a knife. She was declared dead on the scene. The deceased (23) is also a Metro cop. Both were residing at Arnleigh flat on Victoria Embankment. It is not unknown what triggered the fight. Suspect handed himself to police.”
Durban Metro Police commissioner, Steve Middleton, expressed his condolences to the family of Khuzwayo through a Facebook post.
He said: “Evening all eThekwini Durban Metro Police colleagues, I’m not going to elaborate but this is sad. May your soul rest in peace. To your family, God’s blessings and sincerest condolences. You will always be proudly eThekwini Durban Metro Police.”
Khuzwayo was described as a loving and peaceful soul by her family and the manner of her death came as a huge shock to the family.
