Three Springfield elderly homes have received a major healthcare boost after a donation of medical aid kits paved the way for the establishment of dedicated wellness centres for senior residents.

The medical aid kits were handed over to St Michael’s Hostel, Mary Asher Home and St Gabriel’s Home on 17 July through a partnership between St John’s and Ward 31 Councillor Remona McKenzie, bringing a long-held vision to life while embracing the spirit of Ubuntu during Mandela Month.

The donation marks a significant milestone in improving healthcare for some of the community’s most vulnerable residents. The wellness centres will provide easier access to basic healthcare services, routine health monitoring and ongoing support without residents having to leave their homes.

What makes the initiative even more remarkable is the team behind it. Retired nurses have volunteered to staff the wellness centres on a rotational basis, supported by the local clinic and other healthcare professionals, creating a sustainable network of compassionate care for the elderly.

Board members from the three homes said the project had been years in the making and expressed their delight at finally seeing it become a reality.

Councillor McKenzie said the initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration between community organisations, volunteers and healthcare professionals in improving the lives of elderly residents.

The board also extended its gratitude to St John’s, the retired nurses, healthcare workers and everyone who played a role in making the project possible.

They said the wellness centres represent far more than a healthcare service – they are a symbol of dignity, compassion and hope, giving residents peace of mind and the reassurance that quality care is now within easy reach.

“This donation could not have come at a better time as communities across the country honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy by serving those most in need. It is a lasting investment in the wellbeing and dignity of our elderly residents.”
