In celebration of Women’s Month, the SAPS in KwaZulu-Natal has recognised the exceptional achievements of female officers. Among those honoured is Detective Sergeant Snegugu Dludlu from Mayville SAPS, who was commended for her outstanding work on a high-profile carjacking and kidnapping case.
On 23 January 2023, an elderly couple, both aged 82, experienced a traumatic incident at a shopping center in Overport. The husband, who was waiting in their vehicle while his wife shopped, was confronted by two armed men. The assailants forced him into the back seat and drove off. As they traveled along the N2 Freeway, a vigilant security officer noticed the vehicle’s suspicious behavior and pursued it, leading to a dramatic chase. The car eventually crashed into a street light, and the suspects fired shots at the security officer. Despite being fired upon, the officer successfully apprehended one suspect while the other escaped.
A case of carjacking and kidnapping was filed at Mayville SAPS, and an attempted murder case was opened at Newlands East SAPS. Detective Sergeant Dludlu took on the case, opposing bail for the suspects and meticulously gathering evidence to ensure a strong conviction. Her efforts culminated in a successful verdict on May 6, 2024, at the Durban Magistrate Court, where Mzokhona Kwandile Carl Ndlovu, 24, was convicted on all charges. Ndlovu received a 12-year sentence for carjacking, three years for kidnapping, and five years for attempted murder.
Captain Carmen Rhynes, eThekwini District communications officer, highlighted the significance of the case: “Detective Sergeant Dludlu’s dedication was instrumental in securing this conviction. Her commitment to justice exemplifies the professionalism and perseverance of our officers.”
EThekwini District Commissioner, Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa also praised Detective Sergeant Dludlu for her exemplary work. Additionally, Detective Sergeant Dludlu’s Branch Detective Station Commander, Captain John Mthobisi Ngema, recognised her achievement, further underscoring the impact of her contribution to law enforcement.
