A maintenance company employee made a horrific discovery on Friday when a fully developed female foetus was found dumped on Idolifiya Road in Mount Moriah. The baby’s legs had been noticeably devoured by dogs.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call from a member of the public requesting assistance at the scene.

“Reaction officers were immediately dispatched to Idolifiya Road and on arrival interviewed a female employee of a maintenance company,” said RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram.

“She stated that she was engaged in cleaning duties when she discovered a bag containing a blood-stained t-shirt and bank statements discarded on the side of the road. However, she had not given it much attention due to her responsibilities. Approximately two metres away from the bag was a fully developed female foetus. The umbilical cord was cut and not located at the scene.”

Balram described the scene as heartbreaking. “What was really heartbreaking was that both of the baby’s legs had been consumed by dogs from below her knees. It was a ghastly sight and yet another brutal crime against a vulnerable and helpless baby.

“Innumerable messages are shared about protecting babies, minors and the youth, but sadly it falls on deaf ears. No baby should be subject to such inhumane treatment where she was discarded like garbage at the side of the road and left for canines to feast on,” Balram added.

Police have opened an investigation and are appealing to the public for any information.
