In partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, Democratic Alliance Ward 23 Councillor Alicia Kissoon recently organized the Maidens Opening Camp in Reservoir Hills. This significant event aimed to combat gender-based-violence (GBV) while empowering young women. More than 250 maidens from wards 23, 24, 29, and 101 participated, promoting unity, education, and cultural heritage.

The event featured a vibrant march where maidens carried messages advocating for children’s rights and safety. It also provided a platform for young women to engage with key leaders, including representatives from the eThekwini health unit, SAPS, arts and culture, and radio personality Mapule Ngobese, who inspired attendees with messages of self-belief, resilience, and education.

Ward Councillor Alicia Kissoon delivered a powerful speech, emphasizing the role of education, leadership, and community support in the fight against GBV. “Education is the key to success,” she affirmed, encouraging young women to embrace learning as a path to success.

Mapule Ngobese, a media personality and community activist, reinforced the theme of self-empowerment, urging young women to take charge of their futures and not let circumstances define them.

Speakers from SAPS and Sandra Zungu from the eThekwini health unit stressed the importance of women’s safety and the need to report abuse, while Nomonde Mtumtum from arts and culture highlighted the significance of heritage in building confidence and strong values among young women.

The event was further strengthened by the dedication of local matrons, who continue to guide maidens through cultural rites of passage, instilling dignity, self-worth, and a deep sense of identity.

More than just a cultural gathering, the Maidens Opening Camp was a call to action—urging communities to support, trust, and uplift young women. It underscored the power of mentorship, collaboration, and cultural pride in creating a safer, more empowered future for all young women.
