Chatsworth police are investigating an Assault GBH case after a 17-year-old Witteklip Secondary learner was allegedly assaulted with a bush knife outside the school premises recently. Chatsworth SAPS communications officer, Captain Cheryl Pillay said that the victim received medical treatment and was thereafter released into the care of her family.

“An assault occurred at Witteklip Secondary School in Croftdene. It is alleged that a learner was stabbed on her hand by a fellow learner. Chatsworth SAPS FCS Unit is investigating a case of Assault GBH. At this stage, police are conducting further investigations,” said Cpt Pillay.

A video of the assault circulated on social media within hours after the incident occurred. The video depicts, two learners arguing, while the argument continued, one learner pulled out a bush knife from her bag and started to ‘chop’ a fellow learner. The video also depicts the victim being surrounded by multiple other learners and taken away from the scene.

Owner of Amawele Emergency Services, Claude Subramodey said that they were called out to Witteklip Secondary School by educators.  “We arrived at the scene to find a female learner chopped with a bush knife on her hands multiple times. The patient was treated and transported to hospital rapidly in red code,” he said.

A learner who witnessed the incident and asked to remain anonymous said she has been left terrified and traumatised by the incident.

“I have never imagined something so vile would happen in front of my eyes. We go to school to get an education and better ourselves yet it’s clear that others come with malicious intentions. This incident has given me goosebumps. I now fear for my safety at school,” she said.

The Department of Education and the school did not respond to queries at the time of print.
