KwaZulu-Natal has reinforced its position as a leading investment destination as government leaders, investors and industry stakeholders gathered at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) for the 2nd International Special Economic Zones (SEZs) – Infrastructure and Investment Conference.

The two-day exhibition, which officially opened on Thursday, 16 July, has brought together policymakers, business leaders, development agencies and investors from across South Africa and beyond to explore opportunities aimed at accelerating industrialisation, infrastructure development and economic growth.

Opening the exhibition, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev Musa Zondi, reaffirmed the critical role of Special Economic Zones in driving industrialisation, attracting investment, expanding manufacturing and increasing exports.

Addressing delegates, Zondi said KwaZulu-Natal’s strategic location and world-class infrastructure place the province in a unique position to serve as a gateway to African and global markets.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev Musa Zondi and his delegation officially opened the conference and exhibition.

He highlighted key economic assets, including the Ports of Durban and Richards Bay, King Shaka International Airport, the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone and the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, which continue to strengthen the province’s competitiveness and attract investment.

“Special Economic Zones remain a powerful tool for stimulating economic growth, attracting investment and creating sustainable employment opportunities. They play a significant role in positioning KwaZulu-Natal as a preferred destination for business and industry,” said Zondi.

The MEC emphasised that SEZs are not only about investment attraction but also about fostering innovation, supporting local industries, developing skills and creating opportunities for communities to participate meaningfully in the economy.
He said the provincial government remains committed to working closely with the private sector, investors and development partners to unlock new opportunities that will drive economic transformation and inclusive growth.

The conference is providing a platform for government departments, investors, developers and industry experts to engage on policy, infrastructure financing, innovation and strategies aimed at maximising the impact of Special Economic Zones across South Africa and the African continent.

Exhibitors are also showcasing products, services and investment opportunities while forging partnerships that support industrial growth and long-term economic development.
KwaZulu-Natal’s two Special Economic Zones, the Dube TradePort SEZ and the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone, have attracted billions of rands in investment over the years, creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs while strengthening the province’s manufacturing, logistics and export sectors.

The conference continued today with a series of panel discussions, investment presentations and networking sessions focused on advancing infrastructure development, sustainable industrialisation and regional economic integration.

With investment and job creation remaining key priorities for the province, the conference is expected to play a vital role in unlocking new opportunities and strengthening KwaZulu-Natal’s position as a gateway to trade and investment in Africa.
