A young Chatsworth man who had been fighting for his life following a brutal stabbing has died, his family has confirmed.
Keith Govender, 22, who had been in critical condition for several weeks after sustaining severe head injuries during an incident at a pool lounge in Silverglen, passed away after developing an infection while in intensive care.
Family representative Nicole Boodhun confirmed the news to the Merebank and Chatsworth Tabloid newspaper.
“I don’t have a lot of details right now. Just that he had an infection while in ICU at RK Khan Hospital and unfortunately he didn’t pull through,” she said.
Govender had initially been treated at a private hospital following the attack but was later transferred to RK Khan Hospital due to mounting medical costs as his family struggled to keep up with the escalating bills.

The incident that led to his injuries allegedly occurred when an argument broke out during a card game at a pool lounge. Govender sustained severe stab wounds to the head and had remained in a coma for an extended period while doctors fought to stabilise him.
A second victim was also injured during the altercation while attempting to intervene.
The accused in the matter, Mahendra Ramandrah (46), previously appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court on charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was granted bail of R1,000 earlier last month.
Govender’s passing is expected to have significant implications for the case as investigators review the circumstances surrounding his death.
The family is expected to release further details as they come to terms with the loss.
