The International Federation of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate (IFFSK) hosted its eagerly anticipated annual KwaZulu-Natal Championship recently.

The event brought together over 240 karatekas from the organisation’s dojos across the province, showcasing the depth of talent and dedication within the province’s martial arts community.

Now in its 41st year, the IFFSKSA continues to build on its strong legacy, expanding its reach with affiliated dojos both locally and internationally. The KZN Championship is one of the flagship events on the IFFSK calendar and serves as a key platform for student development, technical refinement, and sporting camaraderie.

The tournament was well supported, with parents and families creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the day. The event placed particular focus on youth development, offering young karatekas a chance to test their skills in a formal competition setting — many for the first time.

Senior participants, including those who recently competed at the WUKF National Championship held in Port Elizabeth in March, impressed spectators with their technical precision and fighting spirit. Their performances in both kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) demonstrated the high standard of training within the federation and served as inspiration for their younger peers.

Medals were awarded to the top three performers in each category, while all participants received medals and certificates to acknowledge their effort and encourage future involvement in the sport. This inclusive approach reflects the federation’s commitment to recognising perseverance and fostering growth among karatekas at all levels.

The championship also highlighted the continued development of the IFFSK under the leadership of President and Chief Instructor Hanshi Eric Govender (8th Dan), alongside Secretary-General Sensei Denver Moonsamy. The event ran smoothly and upheld the core values of traditional Shotokan karate: discipline, respect, and excellence.

Looking ahead, the IFFSK is preparing for its next major event, the 41st National Funakoshi Cup Championship, which will be hosted at the University of KwaZulu-Natal later this year. This prestigious national tournament is expected to draw even more competitors from across the country and promises another exciting display of skill and sportsmanship.
Community members, martial arts enthusiasts, and prospective students are encouraged to get involved and support these events, which play a vital role in the holistic development of karatekas across South Africa.
