After more than three decades of service, leadership and unwavering dedication, Jay Behari Ram has officially bid farewell to the Shoprite Group, closing a remarkable chapter that began in 1990 at Shoprite Chatsworth.

Jay’s journey started as a young Trainee Manager in Chatsworth — hopeful, determined and eager to learn. What began as a job quickly evolved into a lifelong calling. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, serving as Assistant Manager, Regional Manager and ultimately Divisional Manager for KwaZulu-Natal. Yet, for Jay, the true measure of his career was never in the titles he held, but in the people he walked alongside.

Reflecting on his retirement, Jay describes his career as a journey of purpose, growth and belonging — deeply rooted in the philosophy of Ubuntu: “I am because we are.” It is a principle that shaped his leadership style and defined his legacy.

“Every milestone, every challenge overcome, and every victory celebrated reflects this spirit,” he shared. “I am who I am because of all of you.”

Throughout his career, Jay believed firmly that no position is above people. He led with collaboration, mutual respect and the understanding that success in retail is a collective effort. The hustle of a busy Saturday store, he often said, humbles even the most senior leader — reminding them that leadership is about humanity, patience and rolling up one’s sleeves when needed.

Colleagues across KwaZulu-Natal describe Jay as a leader who was present — in stores, in boardrooms and during life’s most difficult moments. He witnessed trainees grow into confident leaders and teams unite during challenging periods. For him, those moments embodied Ubuntu in action.

Retail has transformed dramatically since 1990 — with faster pace, rising competition and changing consumer expectations. But Jay says one thing remained constant: the indomitable spirit of the Shoprite family.

Over the years, he received numerous accolades, including Divisional Manager of the Year awards. Yet in typical humility, he credits every recognition to the teams behind him. “If there were an award for teamwork, commitment and perseverance, it would belong to each and every one of you,” he said.

His ties to KwaZulu-Natal run deeper than business. “KwaZulu-Natal is not just a place where I worked; it is my home,” he reflected. Contributing to the development of people and supporting communities across the province remains one of his proudest achievements.

Jay also took time to thank the leadership who believed in him — including Pieter Engelbrecht, Joseph Brönn, Andrew Gardener, Willem Hunlun and Willie Peters — as well as his colleague Riaz Cotwal, who worked closely alongside him in the KZN division. He expressed confidence that under Pieter Engelbrecht’s visionary leadership, Shoprite will continue to reach even greater heights.

Perhaps the most heartfelt part of his farewell was his tribute to his late wife, Annie. During his most difficult period — after losing her — Jay says his Shoprite family became his saving grace. He thanked colleagues for their empathy, patience and support during those dark days.

“Annie’s sacrifices and unwavering support laid the foundation of my career,” he shared, honouring her memory as part of his journey.

As he steps into retirement, Jay leaves knowing the business is in capable hands, with a new generation ready to lead with integrity and compassion. He expressed full confidence in Imraan Hamid, who will now guide Shoprite KZN forward.

For those just beginning their careers, Jay’s advice is simple but powerful: “Start at the bottom. Learn everything you can. Stay humble. Put people first. And don’t give up when times get tough — that’s where the growth happens.”

Retirement, however, is not an ending — but a new beginning. Jay looks forward to spending precious time with his two granddaughters, Saina and Maia Annie, who fill his life with renewed joy and energy.

In his final words to the teams who became his extended family — from Store Managers to Supervisors, Cashiers, Cleaners and Security Officers — he offered gratitude from the bottom of his heart.

“I’ve learned more from you than words can express. Thank you for the memories, the lessons and the friendships. I will carry them with me always.”

As the curtain closes on a distinguished 36-year career, Jay Behari Ram leaves behind more than professional achievements. He leaves a legacy of humility, compassion and people-first leadership — a living example of Ubuntu in action.
