Hundreds of residents from Shallcross Flats packed the Shallcross Community Hall to demand answers over soaring water tariffs and the installation of new water meters, which they claim is unconstitutional.

The meeting brought together residents, officials from the Department of Human Settlements and the ward councillor. However, many residents left disappointed, saying they had not received the immediate relief or clarity they had hoped for.

Residents expressed frustration over what they described as a lack of communication and transparency surrounding the water meter project.

Department of Human Settlements representative Thokozani Magagula said the department would spend the next six weeks engaging with the Shallcross Flats Forum and other relevant stakeholders in an effort to reach an interim solution.

“We will provide a solution, but that solution will be an interim solution for six weeks until we hand over the bulk water meters,” Magagula said.

He explained that once the bulk water meters are handed over, the responsibility for settling water accounts will rest with the respective body corporates.

However, residents raised concerns about the department’s plan, arguing that many of the buildings are affected by ageing infrastructure, burst pipes and significant water leaks.

They warned that unless these maintenance issues are addressed before the handover, body corporates could be left carrying the financial burden of water losses beyond their control.

The matter remains unresolved as discussions continue between the department and stakeholders.

This is a developing story. More updates will follow as they become available.
