Officials and motorists described the scene of the crash that tragically claimed the life of one, as something from a horror movie. “It was horrific to witnesses,” said a motorist, who had stopped moments after the crash occurred along the N11, 12 kilometres outside Ladysmith, late on Thursday evening, 2 September.
RTI, KZNEMS, ER24 Ladysmith and SAPS responded to the scene after a vehicle had lost control, veered off the road and crashed down the steep embankment. “We stopped to see if there was something that we could do or if there were people injured, but only found the driver, who had been pulled apart, it was not a good thing to witness,” added motorists.
The vehicle had crashed through the steel barriers and a fence before coming to an abrupt stop on the side. Emergency officials were called, but the driver of the vehicle was declared deceased. A case of culpable homicide will be investigated by the Ladysmith Police. The deceased had not been officially identified. It was alleged that the vehicle had been travelling from Ladysmith towards Newcastle, when the fatal crash occurred.
