Sydenham based karate champion, Gregory Reeby (17) has been selected to represent South Africa at the 12th World Junior Cadet and Under 21 Karate Championships which will be held in Konya, Turkey from the 26 – 30 October 2022.
Reeby said it has always been his dream to represent the country, however he needs funds from the community to help him jet-off to Turkey. “My dream is to become an Olympian. Going to the World Games in Turkey and achieving a gold medal for all South Africans is my first priority. Long term, I want to work with young people and mentor them. I have received my black belt (Shodun) and I am also a member of the South African Protea team where I received my Protea colours. My goal is to support young adults and open a rehabilitation centre where we will work together with professionals bringing awareness to communities,” he said.
His mother, Edith Reeby said that the young man is determined and strives to be the best in everything he does. “His determination and tenacity is amazing. He started karate from a very young age. When he told me that one day he is going to be a world karate champion, I laughed. At some point, I thought that maybe the coaches just want to make money out of him but he has proved himself and I am very proud of him,” she said. Reeby said R55 370 is needed for his trip to Turkey and they would appreciate donations from the community and businesses. He said: “South Africa, neighbouring countries, friends and family, please support me in this journey. To me, this is the turning point of my life and I promise to make you all proud.” To help fund Gregory Reeby’s dream, contact Edith Reeby on 078-448-1856.
