The Heart of Durban North, a community run initiative with a vision to provide a safe, clean and beautiful space in what is known as the Broadway Business precinct, has established itself as a pillar of the community since its inception last year.

Recently, the organisation has added one more success under its belt by putting up new bins throughout the area, a project that had been spearheaded by members since forming the group. Heart of Durban North spokesperson Ashleigh Rosenbaun said the organisation has been raising money monthly through once off donations from the community and business owners forn the upliftment of the area.

She said: “The purpose of the bins are two-fold. Firstly we thought that there was a lack of bins in the area in Durban North area with many of the bins being broken and not serviced. One of our aims is to clean up the area and the precinct around Swapo and Adelaide Tambo. Secondly, we wanted to just put our brand out there. We hope by people seeing the bins and seeing our branding we can get more donations and do even more for the community.”

Another project on the organisations checklist is the refurbishment of the Post Post Office. According to Rosenbaun, the building was a sore point and in need of much love as no maintenance is done.

“We thought that it would be a good community project to clean up the place as much as we possibly can. For example, cleaning the graffiti and doing some high pressure hosing, sorting out the gates and signage and repainting the post boxes. Just to make it more of pleasant place to be and look at.

“We had to delay the actual day of the clean up because of the rains but we did make a little progress and repainted the post boxes which look amazing! We are going to set a date in the next month, probably in July after the school holidays for the clean-up day,” she said.
