The Greenbuddies Environmental Club (GBEC) was thrilled to announce their new chairperson, Selena Govender, who will be leading the organisation to even greater heights.
The club, which was established in 2016, made it their mission to involve the youth in environmentalism through education and training. Govender, who is currently a high school teacher, is a recent graduate with a bachelor of science honours in environmental science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal who looks forward to making an impact with her skills.
She said: “The role and responsibilities of chairperson is extremely important to me. It enables me to be actively involved in the decisions and direction of Greenbuddies Environmental Awareness Club. I take pride in chairing such accomplished individuals. The previous chairperson has set the bar very high.”
The environmental champion said her primary goal is to ensure that GBEC instills environmental awareness in more communities by bringing together youth from different socio economic backgrounds. “Some of my aims focus on reaching out to schools in rural KZN and educating them on the importance of using sustainable methods that benefit us without destroying the environment for future generations. I would also like to expand our team with more graduates or students. This will also give them the opportunity to meet potential employers,” said Govender.
In honour of Women’s Month, GBEC is currently facilitating a sanitary pad drive to aid women in the Durban North and surrounding areas who are facing period poverty. Govender said the club will be campaigning for World Water Week, to create awareness of this precious resource and how we can conserve it.
“I think now more than ever, the youth need to step in and take action towards cleaning up many of the messes that we have made through irresponsibility. Whether it be from oil spills, air pollution, plastics, or toxic chemicals leaking into our water, there is still a lot that must be done to bring our ecosystem back into balance. Environmental justice for one and all should be our core mission,” said Govender.
GBEC is open to anyone who has passion for the environment. To enquire about joining, email greenbuddiesenviroclub@gmail.com for more information.
