Khulani Children’s Shelter in Durban North was recently filled with joy and laughter as Proactive Concepts partnered with them for a Mandela Day celebration. The organisation dedicated their time to visit the shelter on Thursday, 17 July, bringing along an array of games, gifts, and food to uplift the children.
Khulani Children’s Shelter, officially registered as a non-profit organisation since 2003, provides essential needs such as food, a safe home, and education for vulnerable and orphaned children in the community.
Prudence Mwandla, founder and director of the shelter, shared that she was inspired to start the organisation by the lack of support for children in the community. Expressing her gratitude for the initiative, she said, “It was a positive experience that helped raise awareness about the organisation’s work. Initiatives like this are important for the children and the home, as they promote community engagement and support.”
She further emphasised that public support is crucial for the organisation, as it helps provide vital resources and funding. Such events are also seen as significant opportunities for growth and development for the shelter.
Nosipho Madondo of Proactive Concepts stated that their company was deeply moved by the vital work Khulani Children’s Shelter does in caring for vulnerable and displaced children. She explained, “We saw this day as an opportunity to step out of the boardroom and into the community, bringing joy and hope to those who need it most. Our mission has always been centred around people-first impact, whether through branding, events, or community initiatives. Giving back and uplifting communities aligns perfectly with our values of integrity, collaboration, and innovation with purpose.”
Madondo added that after learning about Khulani’s specific needs and the safe environment they provide, Proactive Concepts felt strongly that this was where they could make the most meaningful impact.
Despite challenges in sourcing the right quantity of food, gifts, and finding the correct sizes for donated t-shirts, Madondo highlighted the most memorable moments of the day. “Seeing the children’s faces light up as we played games, shared meals, and handed out gifts was unforgettable. One of the most touching moments was when the children didn’t want to remove the gifts we gave to them and danced with joy—it reminded us all why we were there,” she said.
Activities brought by Proactive Concepts on the day included various team games and a 360 Photo Booth. Madondo described the day as “eye-opening and fulfilling” for their team members, expressing confidence that the positive response will encourage them to undertake more such initiatives in the future.
Also present to witness one of the shelter’s most memorable days were Terry and Janice Goulding, a couple who have been assisting the organisation since 2002. Terry shared that they are primarily involved in the daily running of the shelter, including maintenance, administration, and working closely with staff members. He commented, “It was lovely watching the children having fun by playing games and dancing.”
The organisation hopes that future community events will be inspired by this successful celebration and become even better.
