A high-speed chase and a salvo of gunfire exploded on the scene during a tense pursuit between Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers and robbery suspects in KwaMashu on Friday.

RUSA boss, Prem Balram said, “At approximately 12:55pm, a member of Reaction Unit South Africa was on patrol in Phoenix when he was flagged down by an individual requesting assistance after the occupants of a Hyundai i20 robbed him of his ATM card.

“The RUSA member spotted the vehicle and a high speed chase ensued. In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspects crossed over the center median and drove contra flow through traffic. As the chase entered KwaMashu, a passenger in the getaway vehicle fired a volley of shots at the pursuing reaction officer.”

“Several bystanders dived for cover in an attempt to avoid being struck by stray bullets. The chase was called off in the interest of public safety due to the area being densely populated with pedestrians and street vendors. No one was injured during the shooting,” added Balram.

“RUSA members are highly trained to deal with violent situations. These reaction officers are confronted frequently by gunfire and other dangerous weapons and have been instructed to defend themselves against such attacks.

“However, the safety of the public is always a priority and therefore the RUSA members pulled back from the pursuit to safeguard the lives of innocent bystanders. Reaction Officers are on high alert for the suspects,” said Balram.
