Community leader and social activist Dr Brandon Pillay received one of the highest international accolades after being honoured at the Olympus International Awards held in Montana, Pretoria, on Saturday, 4 July.
Recognising more than 26 years of community service, Dr Pillay was presented with the prestigious Zeus Award before receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award and being inducted into the Olympus International Hall of Fame.
The awards recognise individuals for exceptional leadership, compassion and lifelong service. For Dr Pillay, the honour acknowledges decades of work in community development, education, youth empowerment, social justice, the fight against gender-based violence and humanitarian efforts.
The awards coincided with the launch of Watering the Seed – Volume 3: Stories of Personal Growth, in which Dr Pillay is a featured author. His chapter, Turning Tragedy into Triumph – My Journey from the Flatlands of Chatsworth to a Doctorate, recounts his journey of overcoming hardship through faith and perseverance.

While completing his PhD, Dr Pillay lost two older brothers, both of whom were tragically shot and killed within 13 months of one another. Despite the losses, he remained committed to his studies while continuing his community work.
Speaking after receiving the awards, Dr Pillay said the recognition was not only a personal achievement but also a tribute to the communities he has served over the years.
“It is a great honour to be part of the launch of Watering the Seed – Volume 3. I thank the Lord Jesus Christ and firmly stand on the promise of Jeremiah 29:11.”
He also expressed gratitude to Dr Shamilla Ramjawan, whom he credited with inspiring him throughout the project.
“I want to sincerely thank Dr Shamilla, who has been such an inspiration throughout this journey. My chapter is more than my story – it is a testimony to the power of faith, resilience and community.”
Dr Pillay said he hopes readers will draw encouragement from his experiences.
“I hope everyone who reads my story will be reminded that our circumstances do not define our destiny. Even through loss, hardship and heartbreak, purpose can prevail. If my journey inspires just one person to keep believing, keep serving and never give up, then sharing my story has been worthwhile.”
For more than two decades, Dr Pillay has served communities through education, youth empowerment, humanitarian projects and civic leadership. His Hall of Fame induction recognises a legacy of empowering others and creating opportunities.
As he celebrates these milestones, Dr Pillay said his message remains one of hope: “May we all continue to water the seeds of hope in others.”
