The Phoenix community is mourning the profound loss of a true community hero, Kuben Govender, a former chairperson of the Phoenix Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF), who succumbed to illness.

Govender, passed away on 8 April and was laid to rest on Thursday, 10 April. Many knew him to be more than a leader, but a symbol of resilience and a beacon of hope in times of fear and uncertainty. During the times of the most trying periods the community has faced, including the height of the lockdown, Govender’s home became a sanctuary of compassion. He organised food hampers for those in desperate need, never turning anyone away. His kindness knew no bounds, and his commitment never wavered.

He was a tireless protector who patrolled the streets in Sector 4 at all hours, often placing himself at risk for the safety of others. Speaking to the Phoenix Tabloid, Phoenix Community Policing Forum (CPF) vice chairperson, Mark Nadasen said: “It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I, on behalf of the entire Phoenix Community Policing Forum, extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues of Mr Kuben Govender, our former sector chairperson, who has passed away after a courageous fight. Kuben was more than just a committed CPF member, he was a true pillar of our community, a servant leader, who dedicated his time, energy and passion to ensuring the safety and well-being of the people he served.”

He said: “Even after sustaining an injury while carrying out his duties, he continued to serve with quiet strength. Though his health declined, his spirit remained unbroken. He embodied the spirit of volunteerism, courage and selflessness that lies at the heart of what the CPF stands for. The news of his passing has deeply affected all of us who had the privilege of working alongside him – his contributions have left an indelible mark on our heart and in the history of our CPF structures.”

“To the bereaved family of Kuben, you are in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. We commit ourselves to ensuring that his memory is preserved and that his example continues to inspire others to serve with same courage and commitment. His footsteps will echo through our streets, and his memory will live on in every act of kindness and every effort toward a safer Phoenix. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” added Nadasen.
