A Stonebridge resident has called for proper maintenance and service delivery after a long-term battle with sewage outside her home. Christina Zondo of Stonebridge Drive, Phoenix, said this has been an ongoing issue since 2019.

“Since 2019, I have constantly raised this issue and have numerous references. The eThekwini Municipality has sent plumbers frequently, but the issue is dealt with temporarily. Due to the constant bursts, I have to step onto dirt and faeces scattered all over my driveway.”

Zondo said on some days she had to remain at home due to the severity of the flow and ensure her grandchildren were not affected by the stench. She explained that the municipality created two small structures to surround the pipe outside her residence and try to control excessive sewage flow. “Even within these structures, there’s always a puddle of water, which again, further highlights the constant sewage troubles I experience. I kindly ask if the municipality could properly address this issue and not just a short-term fix. This issue has led to parts of my property being damaged.”

Zondo thanked Rowena Bosman, Ward 110 PR councillor, for constantly assisting with escalating the matter, regardless of the time of day. Following a visit to Zondo’s residence, Bosman echoed these sentiments and advised that the city needs to deal with the failed infrastructure thoroughly.

The eThekwini Municipality confirmed that municipal contractors are investigating the matter further.
