An Arena Park family is mourning the loss of their father, Shelindra Thakur, whom they believe succumbed to a massive heart attack triggered by a recent violent assault. The 72-year-old, affectionately known as “Pops”, endured severe injuries when he was attacked with a mug on his face and head.
Following the assault, Thakur spent five days in intensive care and despite being discharged, his health deteriorated, leaving him unable to recover fully.

His daughter, Priyankha Thakur, said: “He refused to spend time away from home and I’m certain that the incident added to his stress and anxiety, ultimately leading to his passing from a sudden heart attack.”
Describing the events leading to the attack, she recounted how a drug addict, posing as a job-seeker in the neighbourhood, had been observing her father’s routine for some time.
“One morning, taking advantage of my dad’s predictable schedule, he confronted him as he opened the door to feed the birds. They had a violent altercation, during which my dad fought back. The addict, taken aback, grabbed a coffee mug and inflicted serious injuries before fleeing with valuables,” she said.
Thakur expressed gratitude towards police for swiftly apprehending the suspect and ensuring that her father received medical attention. Although arrested, the suspect was later released.
“Our three dogs were his loyal companions in retirement,” she recalled fondly. “He dedicated much of his time to tending to his immaculate garden, which became a sanctuary for over a hundred birds.”
Highlighting her father’s legacy in Chatsworth, Thakur said: “He and my grandfather were well-known for their entrepreneurial spirit and community presence since moving here in the 1960s. They sold fresh produce from a blue truck, ensuring locals had access to affordable groceries in an era of limited resources. Later, he established Pops Mini Market in Montford, always active and supportive in our community.”
