An election round table discussion was held by Democratic Development Programme (DDP) at the Elangeni hotel in Durban on Thursday, 29 April.
Phoenix community activist and secretary of Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) in Ward 48, Saroj Govender said: “The round table was hosted to discuss electoral accountability and reform and voter turnout. The discussions were very informative and there was good engagement amongst attendees regarding the upcoming local government elections on 27 October.” Govender said that each political party must tell us how they can make their manifesto work for the society rather than wasting their time attacking one another, or busy finding ways to character assassinate. “From my observations when one cannot show any effort of their contribution in building up their communities, they then resolute to cheap politicking. Political parties should not make false and empty promises to gain votes. Speak the truth and it will take you far. “It is very important to educate your voter rather than confuse them. A candidate must be well equipped with knowledge on what is expected of him or her when standing for election. Be the change to make the change,” added Govender.
