Eight people were injured when a building collapsed at eBuhleni in Inanda on Monday during the July gathering of the Nazareth Baptist Church (Shembe).

eBuhleni is a sacred site where thousands of Shembe congregants gather twice a year for prayer and worship. The July congregation is currently underway, with large numbers of worshippers at the site.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the collapse.

“Eight people sustained injuries and were treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further medical care,” said Jamieson.

He said Metro Police, SAPS and eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services worked together to search the rubble and ensure that no one else was trapped beneath the debris.

“The site has been cleared and handed over to SAPS for a full investigation into the cause of the collapse,” he said.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
