The Consulate of the People’s Republic of China in Durban marked the 2026 Chinese New Year with a vibrant reception dinner recently, where Consul General Li Zhigong reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with KwaZulu-Natal in education, technology, and economic development.
The celebration ushered in the Year of the Horse, a symbol of energy, passion, and bold pioneering action. Speaking at the event, eThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba, highlighted the city’s plans to deepen partnerships with Chinese businesses, emphasising the potential for economic growth and job creation in the province.

“Durban is open for collaboration and investment. We look forward to working with Chinese partners across various sectors to create opportunities for our communities,” said Xaba
He pointed to the recent announcement by global e-commerce giant Alibaba, which has chosen Durban as its continental hub, as a prime example of what can be achieved through international cooperation. “With Sub-Saharan Africa’s busiest shipping terminal, Durban is perfectly positioned to lead Alibaba’s operations across the continent,” Xaba added.
The event brought together business leaders, government officials, and community representatives, celebrating not only the rich culture of China but also the growing economic ties between Durban and its international partners.
As the Year of the Horse begins, Durban looks set to harness its strategic advantages and strengthen its role as a hub for trade, technology, and innovation on the African continent.
