The Durban North Library officially reopened its doors on Wednesday, 1 July, unveiling a relocated and newly renovated space designed to better serve the community, with a refreshed focus on its children’s section.
Now situated across the atrium at Kensington Square, the library has undergone a transformation aimed at creating a more welcoming, accessible and engaging environment for young readers and families. The upgraded children’s area features new books, educational games and learning resources, supported through fundraising contributions from local organisations and community partners.
The renovation also benefited from strong community involvement, with a newly installed mural adding colour and character to the space. The artwork forms part of a wider effort to make the library more inviting and to encourage imagination and engagement among younger visitors.

Following the relocation and refurbishment, the library is now fully operational in its new location, with residents encouraged to make use of its services, including free memberships for both adults and children.
Registration requires a South African ID, proof of address and, in the case of children’s memberships, a birth certificate. Once registered, members can borrow books and access the library’s wider educational offerings.
The reopening reflects a broader investment in public learning spaces within Durban North, with the upgraded library positioned to continue serving as a key hub for literacy, education and community engagement.
