Durban filmmaker Keveshan Govender continues to blaze a trail of inclusivity in the film industry.
Originally from Westbrook, Govender shared how his career has been inspired by inclusivity and transformation. “Growing up, I always envisioned myself in front of the camera. However, I quickly realised that opportunities for people of colour were limited in the industry. Instead of letting that discourage me, I chose to take a different path—one that would allow me to create opportunities not just for myself, but for others as well – which led me to casting. My philosophy has always been, ‘If I can’t break the barriers myself, I will open the door for others,” he said.
Govender said his passion for inclusivity and representation is what continues to drive his work in storytelling and filmmaking today. “I have learned that collaboration is key regardless of the size of the project. That it is where everybody succeeds – from actors to crew – as they work together seamlessly. I’ve also learned the importance of staying humble and treating everyone with respect, regardless of their role.”
“I’ve produced a six-part supernatural series for the biggest pan african streaming platform in Africa and Europe – Cinetie. We’ve trended and are still on the trending series on the platform. The show has won ‘Best Story’ in the Authenticity category in many festivals in Cameroon – where it’s been filmed. This includes Pan Film and Television Awards.”
To Govender, identity, resilience, and unity are deeply rooted in African storytelling and he aims to highlight these narratives to resonate globally.
Govender said his mom inspired him; and showed him resilience and unwavering support. When he isn’t creating films, he enjoys watching series and listening to music. “My advice to aspiring creatives is to keep pushing forward. The industry is tough, but talent, perseverance, and humility will open doors. Never compromise your integrity, and always believe in yourself,” he said.
