A man was shot and killed in a brazen drive-by shooting in Springfield Park on Friday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the busy commercial area.
The incident occurred shortly after 1pm at the intersection of Willowfield and Ashfield roads, outside Gorimas.
According to reports from emergency responders, the victim was travelling in a white Chevrolet utility bakkie when he was allegedly targeted by unknown suspects who opened fire before fleeing the scene.
When security and emergency personnel arrived, they found the man with multiple gunshot wounds. Advanced Life Support paramedics and KZN VIP Medical assessed him but found no signs of life. He was declared dead at the scene.
The shooting left a large crime scene, with numerous spent cartridges scattered across the roadway. Police cordoned off the area while forensic investigators gathered evidence.
Traffic in the area was severely affected as Metro Police diverted motorists away from the intersection to allow investigators to process the scene.
A large contingent of law enforcement, emergency services and private security companies responded, including members of the South African Police Service, Metro Police, Fidelity ADT Specialised Response Unit, ALS Paramedics, KZN VIP Medical, Blue Security, Marshal Security, Armoured Defence Force and Slovo Tactical.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown and forms part of an ongoing police investigation.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that may assist investigators to come forward.
