Fran Kristopher, the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) candidate for the eThekwini Ward 33 by-election on 11 September, is enthusiastic about stepping into the role vacated by former councillor Sakhile Mngadi, who has moved to a position at the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
A resident of Austerville, Kristopher grew up in Wentworth and Merebank before studying in Glenwood and Bulwer. She is eager to serve in a community that holds personal significance for her.
Kristopher is well aware of the challenges facing Ward 33. “It’s essential to take a comprehensive view of the ward’s needs,” she said. “This includes maintaining numerous parks, addressing social issues, and engaging directly with the community.” She plans to base her strategies on a thorough assessment of the ward’s past and present conditions, identifying areas of both progress and decline. Kristopher has already noted several concerns, such as infrastructure issues, fallen trees, and overgrown parks. She highlighted her proactive approach, citing her recent work resolving a roofing issue at Pinewood Gardens.
Her immediate goal, if elected, is to collaborate with community members, organisations, and stakeholders to create a clear development plan for the ward. Kristopher emphasised the need for regular feedback to keep residents informed and involved, with safety, security, and a major clean-up operation as her top priorities.
With over 16 years of political experience, Kristopher has advanced through the ranks of the DA, starting as an active member and eventually becoming the chairperson of her branch in Ward 68. Her professional background as a project manager and interior designer, combined with her attention to detail, positions her well for the role of ward councillor.
Kristopher is also a dedicated gender-based violence (GBV) advocate and drug-free educator, having collaborated with various NGOs and NPOs to promote awareness about drug abuse and support women and children’s rights. Her commitment to community service and problem-solving is central to her campaign.
She urged residents of Ward 33 to place their trust in her and work together to enhance the ward. “Let’s keep Ward 33 blue,” Kristopher urged, underscoring her dedication to bringing positive change to the community.
