Hundreds of aspiring construction professionals in KwaZulu-Natal have been given an opportunity to gain industry-recognised skills following the launch of the Construction Industry Development Board’s (CIDB) Construction Workers Short Course Programme, presented in partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

The free programme was officially launched at Coastlands Musgrave Hotel on Tuesday and has already attracted overwhelming interest, with 900 students registered in KwaZulu-Natal. Training is currently being delivered at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Martin Meyer, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant boost for the province’s construction sector.

“This programme is an investment in both people and the future of the construction industry. Building is not only about constructing infrastructure and driving innovation, but also about empowering people with the skills they need to improve their lives and contribute meaningfully to society,” Meyer said.

CIDB Board Chairperson Khulile Nzo said the initiative forms part of the board’s commitment to developing skilled construction workers who can contribute to South Africa’s growing infrastructure sector.

He explained that the short course was developed in line with the CIDB Build Programme, which aims to equip workers with practical, industry-relevant skills required by the construction industry.

“The training will become a regular feature within the construction industry and will strengthen the skills base of workers,” said Nzo.

He added that the programme is expected to improve the quality of construction projects while creating greater employment and career development opportunities.

The programme is open to individuals with a matric qualification who are registered with the CIDB in Grades 2 to 6. Organisers said applicants without a matric certificate are also encouraged to apply through an entry-level pathway.

CIDB Chief Corporate Services Officer Mathodi Ngwenya said the response to the programme had exceeded expectations, reflecting the growing demand for accessible skills development opportunities within the construction sector.

She added that applications remain open online, as the programme is offered on a continuous basis, allowing additional participants to enrol throughout the year.

Dr Mpho Ndou from the University of Johannesburg said the partnership demonstrates the institution’s commitment to expanding access to quality education while supporting South Africa’s economic development through skills training.

The programme is expected to produce a new generation of skilled construction workers who are better equipped to meet industry standards, improve the quality of construction projects and contribute to the country’s growing infrastructure needs.

One beneficiary, an aspiring construction business owner, said she was grateful for the opportunity and hoped the programme would help her grow into one of the industry’s leading entrepreneurs.

“I want to thank all the stakeholders for investing in our future. I also encourage young people across KwaZulu-Natal to apply for opportunities like this because they can truly change your life,” she said.
