Families of rangers who dedicated their lives to protecting KwaZulu-Natal’s wildlife gathered for an emotional Rangers Day commemoration hosted by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, where they honoured colleagues who have passed away.
The ceremony paid tribute to fallen rangers, with family members invited to light candles in remembrance of their loved ones. The moving gesture served as a symbol of gratitude for the sacrifices made by the men and women who devoted their lives to conserving the province’s natural heritage.
One of the most emotional moments of the event came when the family of the late Derk Rassouw was called forward. Although Rassouw did not die in the line of duty, he recently succumbed to illness after years of dedicated service to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
His wife struggled to contain her emotions as she lit a candle in his memory before accepting a framed certificate of honour from Ezemvelo’s leadership.
Ezemvelo said the ceremony was not only about remembering those who had died, but also about recognising the lasting impact they had on conservation and the legacy they left behind. Families were thanked for the sacrifices they made in supporting rangers who often spent long periods away from home while protecting the province’s biodiversity.
