A room full of homeless men and women met at the Denis Hurley Centre (DHC) last week to listen to and challenge councillor candidates campaigning for the upcoming Local Government Elections on 1 November.
The event was part of the National Homeless Manifesto project being driven by the National Homeless Network, to make sure that issues affecting the homeless are on the agenda for local government elections. Present at the meeting were councillor candidates from ActionSA, African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
DHC director, Raymond Pierre, said it was unfortunate that candidates from the Economic Freedom Fighters and African Transformation Movement (ATM) did not make it after they had accepted the invitation. “The homeless voters were very engaged and had specific questions about shelters, jobs and policing that they wanted to raise and candidates had the opportunity to answer all the questions as according to their respective party’s mandate.”
