Busamed Gateway Private Hospital officially launched its new ICU 3/High Care 1 Unit and Cardiac Care Unit on Monday, 1 June 2026, marking a major expansion of its specialised healthcare services.

In his address, hospital manager Rafeek Nakooda described the development as a significant milestone for the hospital.

“This expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering world-class healthcare services and meeting the growing specialised healthcare needs of our community. It strengthens our ability to provide critical care closer to home, ensuring that patients have access to advanced treatment and support when they need it most,” he said.

Nakooda also acknowledged the support received from the Busamed leadership team.
“I would be failing in my duties if I did not acknowledge the Busamed executive team and board members for their unwavering support of the many projects and initiatives we have undertaken over the years. We have seen several expansions in recent years, and we look forward to future projects that will further enhance our services and facilities,” said Nakooda.

Busamed Acting Chief Executive Officer Thabiso Buku said the opening of the new units represented an important step forward in the hospital’s continued growth and commitment to clinical excellence.

“This is a significant moment in the development of Busamed Gateway Private Hospital as we continue to identify opportunities to improve clinical care. The ICU and High Care Unit are critical components of that journey,” said Buku.

“This project has been in the planning stages for some time. It required considerable investment and a dedicated team that worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition. While there is still much work to be done, this development is a critical milestone in strengthening our ability to provide intensive and specialised treatment to patients requiring the highest levels of care,” he said.

Thabiso Buku added that the expansion forms part of Busamed’s broader vision to continually improve patient outcomes through investment in infrastructure, technology and clinical expertise.

Marketing manager Joelene Ranjit said the expansion means Durban families now have faster access to life-saving care right here in the city.

“With these additional facilities, patients can receive critical treatment without unnecessary transfers or delays when every second counts. We thank our community for continuing to trust us with their care. This expansion will also provide 24/7 access to Cardiac Care Unit beds and emergency cardiac care, ensuring specialised support is available when it is needed most,” added Ranjit.
