As South Africans gear up to mark Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July, The Domino Foundation is calling on the community to go a step further — to not just serve for a day, but to ‘Build Beyond the Day’ by becoming year-round agents of change.

While July is traditionally celebrated as Mandela Month, Domino is inviting residents, businesses, schools, and organisations to extend the spirit of ubuntu far beyond just 67 minutes of service. The foundation runs seven life-changing programmes supporting vulnerable children, families, and communities.

Thembeka Gumede, Domino’s Community Connector, said the real impact comes when volunteers return regularly, forming deep connections with both the people they serve and their fellow volunteers. “Committed volunteering is such a rewarding experience. You don’t just help others — you grow, develop new skills, and build lifelong friendships,” she said.

She added that many volunteers find joy in doing simple but vital tasks such as making sandwiches for township preschoolers, playing with abandoned babies, or packing relief hampers for families affected by disasters and poverty. Others with specialist skills like counselling, therapy, or teaching crafts are always welcome, and their contributions are deeply valued.

Domino’s Connector, Thembeka Gumede, is calling on the community to be involved
practically or financially throughout the year to impact and change lives.

“Whatever you have in your hands or your heart — it can make a real difference,” said Gumede.

For those unable to commit time regularly, Domino is encouraging financial support through their new campaign, ‘Way-To-Go: Two-Five-Oh’, where community members can pledge R250 a month to support any of Domino’s seven programmes. “It’s a simple but powerful way to create lasting change. We’ll share regular updates with donors to show the impact their contributions are making in the lives of our beneficiaries,” Gumede said.

She emphasised that sustainable support is crucial: “It’s about building secure futures for those we serve, and that requires more than just once-off help. Together, we can build beyond Mandela Day.”
