The distraught mother of a 7-year-old boy who was shot dead while playing at his home at Milarina Drive in Newlands West on Friday, 21 April said she is still trying to come to terms with his untimely passing.

The Grade 2C Ferndale Primary School learner, Kirsdy Louw was rushed to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries following the shooting.

His mother, Kaylene Christen Courtney Louw described her son as a loving and caring baby. “He was so energetic and selfless. He always put the needs of others before his own. He loved to laugh and dance. He enjoyed playing soccer so much and he also loved making Tik-Tok videos. I thank the community for all the support and love they have shown me. My son had a lot of friends and people who really loved and adored him. I didn’t know that he was so well-known,” she said.

Louw’s class teacher and Foundation Phase Department head, Mrs Avril Shunmugam said she was shattered when his mother phoned to tell her about the tragic incident.
“I was heartbroken and numb. Kirsdy was the life of my class. He was vibrant, energetic and full of life. He respected his peers, myself and staff members at the school. He had so much of love to give. He was my go to person. My little man. He did everything for me even if I asked another learner he was at my table wanting to do it. The class is so empty without him. He left such a void that you feel it all around the class. His infectious smile is what I’m going to miss the most. U can feel the sadness all around because his peers and friends miss him so much.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “Newlands police are investigating a case of murder of a 7-year-old which reportedly occurred on 21 April 2023 at Milarina Drive. It is alleged that the victim was shot by an unknown man while in company of friends. He was fatally wounded and was rushed to hospital for medical attention where he succumbed to his injuries.”
