Years of water disruptions at Parkvale Primary School in Durban have finally come to an end following the installation of a R256 000 borehole and water storage system.

The school, based in Newlands West and serving nearly 1,000 learners, had long struggled with recurring municipal outages that disrupted teaching, compromised hygiene and posed health risks.

The intervention was funded by the South African Muslim Charitable Trust (SAMCT), which stepped in after learning about the school’s ongoing challenges.

SAMCT representative Gaff Osman said access to clean, reliable water is essential for both education and health, adding that frequent outages had severely impacted learning and sanitation at the school.

With only about 30% of learners able to pay fees, Parkvale Primary has operated under financial strain while continuing to provide vital support, including a daily feeding scheme.

The newly installed borehole now ensures a consistent supply of water for drinking, sanitation and hygiene — restoring stability to the school’s daily operations and creating a safer environment for both learners and staff.

Osman said the impact is expected to extend beyond the school, with the system also set to benefit the surrounding community during periods of water shortages.
