Grayson Beare appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 15 May, nearly a year after he murdered Halima Hoosen-Preston and stabbed her husband and son at their Glenwood home on 2 June 2024.
Beare was in court for a report following his mental health assessment to determine whether he is fit to stand trial. He had been sent to Fort Napier Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. However, the court learnt that the assessment report had not yet been handed over, prompting a delay in proceedings.

The magistrate explained that the court generally receives such results within 30 days and consequently remanded the case to 13 June. Beare will remain in police custody until his next appearance.
Imraan Subrathie, secretary general of United for Palestine and an ANC Member of Parliament, attended the hearing, citing public interest in the case both locally and internationally.
“As advocates for Palestine, we believe it is important to closely monitor this case,” Subrathie said. “In the video released by Beare, he clearly states that he attacked the family because they are supporters of Palestine. We are of the view that the court is treating this matter fairly, and therefore, we accept that the case is remanded until the results are released.”
