Sugendren Naicker, 36, also known as Rodney was sentenced to 23 years imprisonment at the Durban High Court on Wednesday, 21 May.
The Communications Officer of SAPS Bayview, Warrant Officer Collin Chetty, said:
“In our view, the sentencing followed the defence legal team’s realisation that the investigating officers had meticulously prepared a ‘court ready’ docket, with all evidence clearly implicating the accused.
“Naicker committed the horrendous murder of his partner, Vyaksha Sookdew, on 21 December 2023 in Havenside, and during the interview, it was established that he had been in a relationship with her for five years, despite being married.

“The investigating team, under the leadership of Detective Warrant Officer Elizabeth Ramrattan, along with prosecutors from the Chatsworth Court and later the Durban High Court, worked together to ensure that justice prevailed.”
The Station Commander of SAPS Bayview, commended the excellent conviction of the accused and also added that as a previous, detective as well as a detective commander, she knows the work which had to be put in by Ramrattan to ensure that the matter be heard in the Durban High Court, which resulted in the accused pleading guilty.
