The long-awaited reopening of the Balkumar Singh Swimming Pool is finally in sight, with Ward 31 Councillor confirming that the upgraded facility is expected to open to the public before the end of November. The news has brought renewed excitement to the surrounding community, which has been eagerly awaiting access to the pool after years of intermittent closures.
The refurbishment follows a series of setbacks that were highlighted in earlier reports in The Springfield Weekly Gazette, documenting the community’s frustrations over the deteriorating condition of the once-popular swimming facility. Previous stories detailed issues ranging from cracked surfaces and faulty filtration systems to delays caused by budget constraints and prolonged tender processes. Residents expressed concern as season after season passed without progress, leaving swimming clubs, school teams, and young learners without a safe place to train.

Cllr McKenzie said: “The latest phase of upgrades included extensive structural repairs, replacement of outdated pump systems, resurfacing of the pool, and improvements to safety and accessibility features. The goal, is not only to restore the pool to full functionality but to future-proof it for years to come.”
Local swimming coaches and families have welcomed the announcement with cautious optimism. Many say the pool has historically played a crucial role in youth development, water-safety training, and providing a recreational outlet for children in the area.
With the finishing touches under way, the reopening of the Balkumar Singh Swimming Pool marks a significant step towards restoring public amenities that bring communities together.
EThekwini Municpality was asked to confirm the official date of opening, however, none was received at the time of going to print.
