This year the auspicious festival of Varalakshmi Pooja, a significant day for the devotees of Goddess Lakshmi, took place on Friday, 5 August.
Goddess Lakshmi is the consort of the God Vishnu. She is one of the most popular goddesses of Hindu mythology and known as the goddess of wealth, purity and good fortune whether material or spiritual. Hindus worship her on the form of a god lamp which they light every day and wash every Friday. Married Hindu women are more identified with the goddess as they are also responsible for the success of the household.
Worshipping the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi, many devotees come together to celebrate Varalakshmi Vratam every year. The significance of the red strings for Hindu practice is called Lakshmi Pooja. The month of August brings a very important Friday for Hindus throughout the world. On a predetermined Friday in August (determined by the moon) on the Hindu calendar, Hindus observe Lakshmi Pooja which is dedicated to the goddess Maha or Mother Lakshmi and the day they tie their red string which shows their devotion to the goddess.
On the day of the prayer the mothers and daughters awake early to clean and wash the floors and surfaces of the home before fasting throughout the day and ending it with the Varalakshmi Vratam. Worship to Mother Lakshmi in this form will bestow you with affluence, fertility, power and wealth. Sweet rice and other offerings for Mother Lakshmi are lovingly prepared and the prayer is done asking the Mother to bless the home and the family for the year ahead. Along with the offerings a red string made up of many layers of red cotton with knots tied at regular intervals in odd numbers for example three/five or seven knots, is placed for blessing. Thereafter the strings are tied onto the wrists of the family by the mother of the house.
