A 32-year old man, who attempted to murder an elderly female after he broke into her place of residence in Trenance Park was arrested, on 16 November.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa Head, Prem Balram, on 14 November, the suspect broke into a home on Aspen Link and while stealing valuables, the 73-year old homeowner returned. Balram said the burglar gagged her with a piece of material and wrapped her in a blanket before he began choking her. “The suspect then fled after the woman started screaming for assistance. The victim confirmed that the suspect was known and lived across her house. It was confirmed that he is a drug addict. He is accused in a double murder and was released on bail from Westville Prison in January 2022,” said Balram.
He added that after news of the attack on the elderly female spread rapidly through the Trenance Park community, the suspect became evasive and did not return to his home following the incident. “A member of the public apprehended the suspect after he was spotted on Wick Street in the Verulam CBD on 16 November. The man thereafter contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for assistance. Reaction Officers were dispatched to the scene and placed the suspect under arrest,” he said. Balram added that the suspect is currently detained at the Verulam SAPS.
