Vigilance, quick action and compassion led to the timely rescue of an infant girl abandoned near a stream between Old Ottawa Main Road and Woodview Drive on Tuesday afternoon.
KZN VIP Emergency Services received a distress call from a motorist and responded immediately. Spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said: “Upon arrival on scene, it was established that a vagrant had discovered an infant girl, believed to be approximately one month old, near a stream in the area.
“The infant had been abandoned with a bag of clothing and was found in a critical condition, suffering from severe dehydration and ant infestation. The circumstances indicate that the child had been left exposed to the elements with significant risk to her life.”

He added: “KZN VIP security teams immediately requested medical assistance. KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene, stabilised the infant, and transported her to hospital for further medical treatment. Prior to transport, the baby was carefully washed, cleaned, and dressed to ensure her comfort and dignity.
“The incident is extremely distressing and highlights the vulnerability of infants and the importance of community vigilance and swift reporting of suspicious or concerning situations.”
According to Naidoo, the South African Police Service (SAPS) was notified.
“KZN VIP Emergency Services commends the concerned members of the public whose quick actions contributed to saving the infant’s life,” Naidoo said.
