Muslims across South Africa will be scanning the skies this week for the sighting of the new crescent moon, an event that marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan and the commencement of the month of Shawaal. The first day of the new month heralds the arrival of Eid al-Fitr, a significant religious festival widely known as the “feast of fast-breaking.”
This joyous occasion symbolises spiritual renewal, gratitude, and the reward that follows a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and charity. Eid al-Fitr is a time for families and communities to gather in prayer, share meals, and extend acts of kindness to those in need.It also serves as a reminder of the values of compassion, unity, and generosity that Ramadan instils in believers, as Muslims around the world celebrate the blessings and spiritual growth gained during the sacred month.

The Institute for Learning and Motivation (ILM), a Durban-based NPO, will be hosting its popular “Eid With A Difference” event at Kingsmead Oval. The initiative ensures that the joy of the day is shared across all sectors of society.
The organisation’s Founder and Co-director, Fatima Asmal, said: “The purpose is to afford financially disadvantaged kids and their Islamic studies teachers an opportunity to celebrate Eid in the same manner that middle income and upper income families celebrate.”
The event will kick off at 8am with Eid Salaah (prayer), before festivities take place from 8.30am to 2pm.
In the spirit of this auspicious occasion, the management and staff of Durban North News, together with ILM, extend their heartfelt wishes to the entire Muslim community for a peaceful and prosperous Eid.
